Academic Overview
At MetroWest Christian Academy, we give a strong academic foundation to our students starting in kindergarten. Our intensive phonics approach to reading is unmatched in any reading program. Our kindergarten 4 year olds (K4) are reading by March. The A Beka Book Reading Program has been a success story nationwide for many years because it uses a superior phonics approach to beginning reading. This is an intensive phonics program, not just a sight reading program garnished with phonics. The intensive phonics approach is taught systematically throughout the kindergarten and lower elementary curriculum to ensure continued growth in skills. The phonics skills are reinforced with daily seatwork, including phonics activity books, phonics-based worktexts, penmanship worksheets, and other classroom support materials that review the concepts taught in phonics instruction.
When a student can read well, it gives him/her a confidence in any other subject that is reading-based such as spelling, history, science, and health. This program builds enthusiasm in parents as well as students and further helps to motivate students in learning with genuine, early achievement in reading.
In addition to our strong phonics foundation, we give our students a solid math foundation. In the lower elementary grades, our students are usually at a higher level in math skills than the national norm. We teach each concept, whether it is addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, to mastery. As is the case with the phonics program, there is much daily review of each concept, along with a well-paced introduction to new material. Because a student has the basic building blocks of math conquered, it builds confidence and knowledge when it comes to more difficult concepts in upper elementary math.
We invite you to see for yourself how a strong foundation in academics can lead your child to a successful educational career. This also promotes your child’s success as an adult. They are inextricably linked. That is why we believe “Developing Potential in Your Child” is a serious responsibility here at MCA.
